What Can I Do If My Employer Fires Me Because of My Religion?

Can I be fired because of my religion? There are laws that are meant to prevent people from losing their jobs because of their religious beliefs. However, in some cases, employers have failed to follow these laws, resulting in employees being harassed, discriminated against and losing their jobs because of their religion.

Could I Lose My Job Because of My Religious Beliefs?

Last month, the Los Angeles Daily News reported that an engineer who worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit. Per the Daily News report, he alleges that he lost his job, because he complained about being harassed for exposing structural safety problems and for his Muslim faith.

In the lawsuit, the engineer claims that his supervisor told him that he should not have revealed that he was a practicing Muslim, because observant Muslims are not liked by the school district. He alleges he was targeted after he began taking longer lunch breaks on Fridays to attend prayers at an area mosque. After he became more open about his Muslim faith, the engineer said he received negative work evaluations and was pressured into resigning. His lawsuit includes allegations of discrimination, Labor Code violations, harassment and retaliation.
