Comedian and 30 Rock star Tina Fey recently gave an interview to Town & Country Magazine that shows us how the wage gap is affecting female comedians. During the interview, Fey was asked what it is like to be a woman in comedy. She gave an astute and accurate answer.
According to Fey, women are paid much less for producing quality work while male counterparts are producing lower quality work and making more money.
How Comedian Sarah Silverman Took On the Wage Gap
Our previous blogs have discussed how the wage gap affects Hollywood, but the comedy industry suffers from the same issues. Fortunately, other female comedians have been putting up a good fight against the entertainment industry’s wage gap.
In 2014, comedian Sarah Silverman launched a crowdfunding campaign to close the wage gap for all women. The goal of the crowdfunding campaign was set at $30 trillion. Why so much money? Well, she is a comedian, but it was also to help show how much money women have lost and could continue to lose.
According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, women made 78.3 cents for every dollar made by males in 2013. There are 69 million women in the workforce. When multiplied over the course of a 40-year career, women lose $435,000 on average. When $435,000 is multiplied by 69 million, you get over $30 trillion.
Setting such a goal, while impossible, does make for an interesting story and it shows possible numbers behind the wage gap.
