Former Aide to LA City Councilman Files Sexual Harassment Suit Against Chief of Staff

A former aide for Los Angeles city councilman Mitch Englander has filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the councilman’s chief of staff. An unnamed plaintiff that was a former field deputy for Englander filed the lawsuit in September against chief of staff John Lee. The plaintiff was employed from February 2012 to April 2013 and claims Lee made inappropriate sexual jokes and comments directly to and in front of the plaintiff.

The plaintiff also claims that Lee would not hire her as a public safety deputy because she was a “petite, pretty girl” and the public would want a male in the position. The suit also claims Englander made inappropriate comments to the plaintiff and perpetuated a “discriminator and harassing” culture in his office. The plaintiff alleges she complained to Englander about the discriminatory behaviors and he made inappropriate comments, commenting on the plaintiff’s appearance and questioning her motives.

Englander has called the lawsuit “surprising” but has made no further comments on the case. The lawsuit alleges wrongful termination and violation of the Fair Employment and Housing Act.
