What Can My Employer Do to Protect Me from Sexual Harassment?

Recently, The Mercury News reported on a sexual harassment lawsuit involving Shell Oil and a former employee. The ex-Shell employee claims the oil giant did not do enough to prevent her from suffering workplace harassment and discrimination.

According to the lawsuit, which was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, the former Shell employee alleges she was the target of sex discrimination and sexual harassment while working for the oil company. Examples of the treatment the woman claims she received includes having a supervisor tell her that females do not last long in his department and finding a sticker left on her desk with this statement written on it: “If your (vagina) hurts, just stay home.”

The woman also claims in her suit that the harassment and discrimination continued even after she reported it to Shell’s human resources department. The ex-Shell employee is suing for wrongful termination as well, alleging that she was fired as retaliation for the sexual discrimination and harassment complaints she filed with human resources.
